Storm Omens T-Shirt

$24.00

Humans have always sought to make sense of the natural world, imbuing its creatures and its cosmos with hidden meaning. Long before meteorologists in business casual graced our tv sets, we had omens. Shared superstitions around the appearance of natural harbingers, ways of seeing in our world passed between generations through folktales and country wisdom that warned a storm was coming.

A group of crows can feel rather ominous, and so it’s no surprise that they were once seen as a sign of ill weather. Similarly; snakes were mythologized as in league with rain, wind, and destruction. The weather thistle was said to predict rain through the opening and closing of its spines (alas a folkloric bit of wisdom that hasn’t born out under the observation of science). You can avoid reading the heaven for signs these days by pulling up the weather app, but it's fun to look back on our history of attempting to understand our natural world.
