The death’s-head hawkmoth has long been a vector for superstition and fear. It’s distinctive thorax markings give the impression of a human skull, and so it’s not all that surprising that it was once associated with omens of ill fortune and death. Which is really too bad because these harmless beauties pose no threat whatsoever (unless you count the potential to startle would be predators with a loud and not particularly menacing chirp).

Here at Fennec we have a soft spot for nature’s maligned oddities.
